About Tale of War

Tale of War is an independent educational site about how war is remembered, recorded and retold. It is a DreamsStreet publication.

What we cover

Three subjects, and only three: the history of military storytelling, the practical work of preserving veterans' accounts, and the difference between a firsthand account and the history written later. We don't publish news, opinion on current conflicts, or political commentary.

How we research

  • Every factual claim is checked against a primary or authoritative source: the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Department of Veterans Affairs, university presses and libraries, museums and peer-reviewed scholarship. Sources are listed at the end of each article.
  • Procedures that can change, like how to request records or donate a recording, link to the official page so you can confirm the current details.
  • When we can't verify something, we leave it out.
  • We quote historical letters and poems only when they are in the public domain, and we paraphrase modern authors.

How we write about veterans

With respect. Discussing how memory works or how historians weigh evidence is never a suggestion that anyone's account is untrue. Our aim is to help more stories be recorded and understood, not to judge them.

Corrections

If you spot an error, please tell us. We correct mistakes promptly and note significant changes on the page.
